Sustainability has become an increasingly discussed topic over the years. It is becoming a more prominent phenomenon in our global society, as the effects on our planet have become more apparent over the years. That is why people see it as a great importance to practice sustainability. Event organisers included, as they cover a big surface with many people in which they can make decisions which can make a big difference for the well-being of our planet.

Elements of events

Events come in many shapes and forms. But there are elements that first come to mind when thinking of events. That is because most of these things are core elements of events. Whatever event you have in mind or whatever event you might be organising, this list will definitely give you tips on how to make the event more sustainable.

1: Limit the use of disposable plastic cups

Over the years, events have used plastic cups when serving beverages. The consumer would throw the cup away or it would unfortunately end up on the ground somewhere. The alternative is to provide the visitors of the event with a coin. They can swap this coin at the bar, or another place they can get a drink, for a plastic cup. When they finish their drink, they keep their cup and can swap it with a new one when they go to get a new drink. This way, the staff can control the waste of cups and the disposal and use of them is limited.

2: Reusable cups

Many events have relied on plastic disposable cups when handing out or selling beverages. However, this is not a sustainable option, as there is yet to be found a way to break down this material. Disposable plastic cups pile up on waste dumps and pollute our land and ocean. Reusable cups are a solution to this. Reusable cups can be bought as well as be rented to use at events.

3: Eco-friendly venue

The location of your event can make a big difference in reducing the carbon footprint. A centrally located spot can make the event accessible for all attendees. It will reduce the attendee’s travel, which results in lower emissions. By choosing a centrally located place attendees are also able to use public transport or maybe even walk or cycle to the event’s location.

4: Green transportation

How to also increase the amount of attendees who use public transport is by promoting it. You can even collaborate with public transport providers to offer discounts or promotions for the event’s attendees. This way, it is more attractive to choose to take public transport and the rates of people doing so increases. To make it even more attractive to take public transport, is to already start the event in the trains and buses. By collaborating with the public transport providers, you can discuss, for example, to start playing music or serving drinks that will also be at the event. This way, the attendees can already get into the ambiance of the event they are heading to.

5: Paperless tickets

Using paperless invitations and tickets for the event for attendees is a way to reduce waste of your event. You can provide the ticket via the event platform, where visitors can register and obtain the tickets. After that, the invitation to the event can be sent by email. The attendees can enter the event by showing their invite or by receiving a QR-code to enter the event.

6: Solar-power

Conventional energy lean heavily on fossil fuels and are not only polluting our planet by greenhouse gas emissions, but are also dependent on rapidly depleting resources. By using green energy the emission decreases. Solar panels can be used to power any technique at the event. The panels capture sunlight and convert it directly into electricity without harmful emissions.

7: LED lighting

LED lights have become rapidly more popular to use. A big reason is its commendable energy efficiency. They consume significantly less power than traditional light bulbs which results in tremendous cost savings. Their longevity and durability leads to reduced waste and further cost savings. In addition, LED lights are very adaptable and present event organisers with many variations in light intensity, colour and dynamic effects.

8: Reusable decor

Reusable decor includes embellishments that are made for multiple uses instead of being discarded post-event. Single-use, disposable decor has been used since forever at events, but the environmental costs are staggering. Reusable decor is not only environmentally friendly by reducing waste, but is also budget friendly. After the decor has been used, it can be reused or first be refurbished into a new decorative piece.

Conclusion

In conclusion, sustainability is a very important topic and a phenomenon to live up to. Events can make a big environmental impact, so making eco-friendly decisions when organising events makes a big difference for our planet. There are many different ways to make an event more sustainable. However, being interested and wanting to make the event more sustainable is a big step in the good direction.
