Learning a new language while travelling offers an immersive experience that is difficult to replicate in a traditional classroom. By being surrounded by native speakers and real-life contexts you can upgrade your linguistic skills in a whole new level. Travelling is the best way to learn a new language and here’s you will find out how.

1.   Engage in Language Exchanges with Locals

One of the most compelling ways to learn a language is to practice it with native speakers. While travelling, you can participate in informal language exchanges where you can connect with the locals. For example, you can attend events like festivals or community gatherings, where you’ll naturally blend in with the locals.

By practicing with locals, you'll not only improve your conversational skills but also pick up slang and adopt their mannerisms.

2. Use Learning Apps

Enhance your learning journey by using Apps like Duolingo, Babbel etc. It might not be as fascinating as communicating with the locals, but it will for sure help you memorize some words and phrases that you could use on daily bases.  Although, it’s important to remember that these apps should be seen just as a supplement because they are structured and give some time to think, while in real life it is not like that.

3.   Daily Conversations

Another helpful way to learn a new language while traveling is to adopt it in your lifestyle. Try reading menus, asking for recommendations, or even chatting with the waitstaff. Don’t hesitate to order your coffee on native language. These were exactly the steps I was following when I was trying to learn Spanish. Un cappuccino con canella por favor!

Also, in public transportation you can practice reading signs, listening to announcements, and even asking for directions.

Besides that, shop at local markets, ask about products, and try to learn phrases specific to buying and selling.

These everyday interactions teach practical and common vocabulary that is easy to remember.

4. Stay in Homestays or Airbnb with Locals

Instead of staying in hotels, choose accommodations where you interact with native speakers daily, like homestays or Airbnbs. You’ll naturally have more opportunities to converse in the target language, whether it’s about local food, or simply making small talk. Learning a language is more about understanding the customs, traditions and social norms. By staying with locals, you gain a deeper cultural insight, making language learning more meaningful and enjoyable.

5. Participate in Guided Tours in the Local Language

Signing up for a local tour conducted in the target language is a fun way to combine sightseeing with language practice. Whether it’s a walking tour, cooking class, or historical excursion. Hearing new words in the context of the places you're visiting makes them hard to forget. For instance, hearing the history of a monument in the target language ties the words to the experience.

Don’t hesitate to ask guides questions in the local language to challenge yourself and deepen your understanding.

By leveraging guided tours, you can expand your vocabulary and comprehension in a way that’s engaging and memorable.

Conclusion

Traveling offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a language, making the learning process faster, more meaningful and often fun. Whether through language exchanges, everyday interactions, or guided tours, these creative strategies can help you make the most of your travels while mastering a foreign language. So, pack your bags, embrace new experiences, and watch your language skills spread on the go!
