Travel Your Way to Fluency: How Immersion in New Cultures Accelerates Language Learning

Traveling is a great way to explore new places. Cultural immersion in a new place provides the opportunity to learn a new language not in a traditional way of teaching, but in more interactive and unique ways. Daily interactions with locals, grocery shopping, navigating public transportation are just some of the ways that can help you improve your linguistic skills beyond the classroom. If you want to find out about more tips about that keep reading this article.

Learning a language by reading a newspaper
  1. Immersion with Locals help language learning

Learning a new language or practicing it is much more than just memorizing the vocabulary and grammar. When you encounter with native people you get the chance to understand the culture, customs, traditions and mentality of people in a deeper way. Also, you can learn idiomatic expressions that are usually not taught in schools and textbooks. Personally, while living in Barcelona I was trying to order food and drinks in Spanish and sometimes it didn’t sound so bad.

  1. Participate in Cultural Events

Try to find local events, shows, stand up comedies etc where you can interact with locals more. For example, a very fun activity is to participate in cooking lessons. Not only you have the chance to listen and practise the language, but you also learn how to cook traditional dishes. Getting to know the cuisine is a huge part of the cultural understanding.

  1. Choose Public Transportation

Instead of always taking a taxi, try to take the metro or the bus. By hearing the conversations, noticing how people act and talk you get the sense of the language. Furthermore, don’t be afraid to ask for directions or help in order to find your destination. Most of the time people are willing to offer help.

  1. Carry a Notebook

Maybe you will find it a bit strange and inconvenient but it’s pretty useful. Writing down new words and phrases that you learn daily helps reinforce the memory. Plus, it’s a quick reference when you want to recall something.

  1. Utilize Technology for learning a language

Apps like Duolingo, Babbel, and Google Translate are excellent travel companions. Use them to practice vocabulary or check pronunciation. You can choose a program for beginners and start your journey whenever and wherever you want, just make sure you carry your phone with you. Also, you can try switching your phone’s language settings to the one you’re learning.

  1. Engage with Local Media

While visiting a specific country try to listen to local radio stations, watch TV shows, or read newspapers. These activities provide exposure to colloquial language and cultural nuances.

  1. Choose Homestays or Airbnb

This time try to get out of your comfort zone and stay in a homestay or Airbnb instead of a hotel. In such places it’s more likely to interact with locals and learn about their daily life, activities and habits.

Conclusion

All in all, traveling opens a whole new world in front of you. It provides you a lot of opportunities, but it’s up to you to take them. Learning a new language while traveling might seem exhausting sometimes, but it totally allows you to live a completely unique experience above the walls of the classroom.
